One of the most common questions I get is: if two people are born at the same time, do they have the same life?
Short answer: no.
Every hour, thousands of babies are born around the world. Many people share similar or even identical birth charts. But having the same chart does not mean they will live the same life.
That said, people with the same chart often experience similar themes and relational patterns, expressed differently and in varying degrees.
For example, imagine two people born with a chart structure associated with leadership, authority, and influence. One might become the head of a global company. The other might lead a community organization or run a family business. The scales are very different, but the underlying pattern, a drive toward leadership, expresses itself in both.
So what determines which version of those patterns a person lives? From my experience and study of Chinese metaphysics, it comes down to three traditional factors.
1. Family and Generational Patterns
In Chinese metaphysics, the patterns carried through a family line are considered one of the most powerful influences on how a chart expresses itself. Some families carry supportive conditions that give their descendants a strong foundation. Others carry imbalances that the next generation tends to inherit through the circumstances it grows up in.
We cannot change what happened before us. But the choices we make now shape the conditions we pass forward. The positive patterns we build today become the foundation for those who come after us.
2. Feng Shui of the Home Environment
The physical space where you live and grew up has a significant influence on how your chart's potential expresses itself. This is one of the factors that is within your control. Traditional feng shui is built on the principle that the arrangement and orientation of your living environment interacts with your personal energy in ways that can either support or hinder your chart's natural patterns. 3. Feng Shui of Ancestral Sites
In traditional Chinese metaphysics, the feng shui of ancestral burial sites is considered a major influence on the circumstances of future generations. This is a long-held principle in classical practice. Like home feng shui, it is a factor that can be addressed. Ancestral Graves explains how a burial site is read.
The Bigger Picture
Life is not entirely predetermined by the birth chart, and it is not entirely free will either. Traditional Chinese metaphysics frames it as an interaction between the two: the structure of the chart and the choices made within that structure.
The old saying 尽人事,听天命 captures it well: do your best with what you can control, and accept what you cannot.
A BaZi chart is a framework. It shows you the shape of the road ahead: where the sharp turns are, when to push forward, and when to hold back. But the decisions are still yours. Too often, people push against the natural flow of their chart's phases. They force things, chase trends, or imitate others. And then they wonder why nothing seems to gain traction.
But once you start aligning with your chart's natural patterns (your strengths and your timing), things tend to shift. Life stops feeling like a constant battle.
Three Questions Worth Asking Yourself
If you are wondering whether you are on the right path, consider these:
-
Do you find it relatively easy to learn the skills and knowledge this path requires?
-
Does the work feel natural, as if time passes quickly when you are doing it?
-
Are people and opportunities appearing without you having to force them?
If the answer is yes to all three, that is a strong signal of alignment. There will still be ups and downs, and that is normal. But the overall sense is one of flow.
On the other hand, if everything feels forced, if you constantly have to discipline yourself through resistance, if anxiety is persistent and gains do not last, those are signals worth paying attention to. You may be working against your chart's natural structure.
Be honest with yourself. Most people already sense instinctively what fits. They just overthink it or rationalize their way past the signal.
