Navigating Tough Phases: What Your Chart Shows About Difficult Times

Reviewed by Sheng Pin Kai · February 2025

Lately, someone asked me how to get through a rough patch.

That is the thing about being a practitioner — people tend to reach out when life is not going well. If everything is smooth, most people do not think about their chart. It is during the difficult stretches that they look for clarity: why is this happening, can anything shift, and what is the road ahead.

But here is what the classical systems consistently show: life moves in cycles. The I Ching has been saying this for thousands of years (生生之谓易). Everything in nature follows a pattern — birth, growth, decline, and renewal. We are no exception. Throughout life, we go through changes that force us to see things differently and adjust how we live. These are not random hardships; they are part of the cycle structure built into every chart.

Can Prayer, Feng Shui, or Rituals Change Your Phases?

A lot of people ask whether prayer, blessings, or feng shui adjustments can redirect a difficult period. The honest answer from traditional Chinese metaphysics is that cycles are inherent — they are part of the chart's structure from birth. Your natal chart is a map of the phases you will move through. Practitioners are reading the map, not rewriting it.

Even the most powerful figures in history, with the best advisors at their side, moved through their difficult phases. When a cycle of decline and transformation arrives, it runs its course. But just as the darkest part of winter eventually gives way to spring, difficult phases are followed by periods of recovery and growth.

How the Cycles Work in Practice

Success and difficulty are both part of the same structure. When you are at your peak, the conditions for the next shift are already forming. When nothing seems to be working, the elements for a turning point are gathering. Resisting these natural shifts tends to be exhausting and unproductive. As the I Ching expresses it: "Act in harmony with circumstances" (同声相应,同气相求,水流湿,火就燥,云从龙,风从虎,圣人作而万物睹).

We see this clearly in BaZi. If Wealth elements grow too strong in a phase, they tend to weaken the Resource elements that protect the Daymaster — meaning sudden financial gains can coincide with legal pressure or other complications. If Officer elements gain too much power, they clash with Peer elements, so rising professionally may come with increased interpersonal friction. It is how the elemental balance shifts naturally over time.

Western astrology describes similar patterns through planetary transits. When someone is going through a transformative period, the transits often point to exactly where the pressure is coming from. The systems use different frameworks, but the observation is the same: life phases have a structure, and that structure is not random.

Working With the Cycle, Not Against It

Some people ask whether they can "transcend" their chart. But that framing misses the point. The chart is not something to escape — it is a framework for understanding what each period of life tends to bring, so you can respond with clarity rather than confusion.

We resist because we do not enjoy change — especially change we did not choose. But just as we cannot stop winter, we can prepare for it. We know spring will follow. And if the conditions are truly difficult, we can make adjustments where the chart allows room.

When my business failed and I lost nearly everything, I turned back to astrology and metaphysics. During those difficult years, I reminded myself that the cycle would eventually turn. And it did. By the time my circumstances changed, I had changed too. I stopped forcing things that were not aligned with my chart's patterns. That was when life genuinely started to improve, and I found a sense of direction I had not felt before.

The classical systems do not promise that difficult phases will disappear. What they offer is a framework for understanding where you are in the cycle, what is likely shifting, and how to move with the current rather than against it.
