The Direct Officer structure
When the month branch gives the Direct Officer, the chart has a Direct Officer structure. See what holds yours up, what can unsettle it and what restores it.

In Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi), a chart has a Direct Officer structure when the stem taken from its month branch is the Direct Officer: the stem that controls the Day Master and has the opposite polarity. It rests on Wealth, which generates the Officer, and Resource, which protects it. What to be mindful of is the Hurting Officer, Seven Killings mixed in, a clash, and a Day Master too weak to carry the Officer.
From this lesson on, each structure taken from the month has a lesson of its own, covering three things: what holds it up, what can unsettle it, and what restores it. The Direct Officer structure comes first.
What the Direct Officer structure is
The Direct Officer controls the Day Master, but the two are one yin and one yang. The Deep Sea of Ziping (渊海子平; Ming dynasty, 16th century) says that yin and yang paired together complete the way. Because they are paired, there is cooperation within its control: the Direct Officer restrains the Day Master and also shapes it into something capable. The True Interpretation of Ziping (子平真诠; Qing dynasty, 18th century) likens it to the people one should respect:
正官者分所当尊,如在国有君,在家有亲Our translation: The Direct Officer is what one’s place calls on one to honor, like the ruler in a state and the parents in a family.
So the Direct Officer is to be protected, and what it fears most is punishment and clash.

What holds it up
The Direct Officer structure rests on Wealth and Resource: Wealth generates the Officer, and Resource protects it. If the Day Master is strong and the Officer light, Wealth generates the Officer; if the Day Master is weak and the Officer heavy, Resource converts the Officer and supports the Day Master. When Wealth and Resource are both revealed, kept apart and out of each other’s way, the structure is at its most complete. The Deep Sea of Ziping also says the Officer needs a strong Day Master and Resource to do its work fully.

What can unsettle it
- The Hurting Officer or the Food Star controlling the Officer.
- Seven Killings mixed in with the Officer.
- The Direct Officer bound by a combination, or more Direct Officers elsewhere in the chart.
- A punishment or clash striking the Officer in the branches.
- A Day Master too weak to carry the Officer. When the Direct Officer is plentiful and the Day Master weak, the Officer can be as hard to bear as Seven Killings.

What restores it
- Against the Hurting Officer, use Resource: Resource checks the Hurting Officer and protects the Officer. Watch then for Wealth breaking the Resource.
- Against Seven Killings mixed in, clear the mix: something combines Seven Killings away or checks it, and the Direct Officer remains.
- When the Officer’s branch is clashed, what tends to ease it is another combination that resolves the clash.
- When the Day Master is weak, Resource and Peers that support it are welcome.

Decade phases
The True Interpretation of Ziping, on decade phases for the Direct Officer, goes through what suits each pairing of the structure. The principle is to make up whichever side is short: if the Day Master is a little light, decade phases that support it suit; if the Officer is a little light, decade phases that help the Officer suit. What the natal chart does not welcome, it does not welcome in a decade phase either: the Hurting Officer, Seven Killings, a combination with the Officer, a punishment or a clash. The details are in the lesson on decade phases and your structure.

Try it on your chart
- Confirm the pivot is the Direct Officer: the stem taken from the month controls the Day Master and has the opposite polarity.
- Look for Wealth and Resource: are they present, are they revealed, and are they kept apart?
- Look for the Hurting Officer and Seven Killings; see whether the Direct Officer is combined or clashed, and whether the four pillars hold several Direct Officers.
- If there is a Hurting Officer, see whether there is Resource; if there is Seven Killings, see whether anything combines it away or checks it.
- Compare with your grade from the lesson on Day Master strength: if the Day Master is strong, look to Wealth; if it is weak, look to Resource.
