The Hurting Officer structure

In Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi), a chart has a Hurting Officer structure when the stem taken from its month branch is the Hurting Officer: the stem the Day Master generates that has the opposite polarity. It takes restraining use, and its two main forms are the Hurting Officer generating Wealth and the Hurting Officer paired with Resource. The books see it as the Day Master’s refinement and talent.

The Hurting Officer controls the Direct Officer, and The True Interpretation of Ziping (子平真诠; Qing dynasty, 18th century) does not count it among the benefic elements. But the book does not think less of it:

伤官虽非吉神，实为秀气，故文人学士，多于伤官格内得之。

Our translation: Though the Hurting Officer is not a benefic element, it is truly refinement and talent; so scholars and writers are often found among Hurting Officer structures.

The Hurting Officer is where the Day Master’s finest energy flows outward, which is why the book calls it refinement and talent. Commentary on the True Interpretation of Ziping (子平真诠评注; ROC, 1936) says that when the Day Master is strong, draining it with the Hurting Officer is better than controlling it with the Officer or Seven Killings. The True Interpretation of Ziping also notes that the Hurting Officer structure has more pairings and more variations than other structures, so climate, strength, what the chart welcomes and purity must all be weighed together.

The Hurting Officer generating Wealth

The Day Master is strong and rooted; the Hurting Officer generates Wealth, and Wealth generates the Officer. The Hurting Officer then does not attack the Officer but helps generate it. Wealth rooted in the branches is better still. When a branch combination turns the Hurting Officer into Wealth, the book finds the structure more refined. The Deep Sea of Ziping (渊海子平; Ming dynasty, 16th century) and Comprehensive Guide to the Three Fates (三命通会; Ming dynasty, 16th century), on the Hurting Officer, both say it should meet Wealth.

The Hurting Officer paired with Resource

When the Hurting Officer is strong and the Day Master a little weak, use Resource: Resource checks the Hurting Officer and supports the Day Master. The Resource should be rooted, but not plentiful. If the Day Master is already heavy and the Hurting Officer light, more Resource holds the Hurting Officer down, and its refinement cannot show.

Other pairings

• The Hurting Officer with both Wealth and Resource: Wealth and Resource control each other, so they must be kept apart on the stems, out of each other’s way.
• The Hurting Officer with Seven Killings and Resource: the Hurting Officer is plentiful and the Day Master weak; Seven Killings generates Resource, and Resource supports the Day Master and checks the Hurting Officer. Best with no Wealth.
• The Hurting Officer with Seven Killings: the Hurting Officer checks Seven Killings, and this can form a structure too. Again best with no Wealth.
• The Hurting Officer using the Officer: only a Metal Day Master with a Water Hurting Officer welcomes the Officer, with Wealth or Resource to assist; the Hurting Officer and the Officer should not both be revealed on the stems.

What can unsettle it

• The Hurting Officer meeting the Officer: a structure that uses the Hurting Officer generally does not welcome the Direct Officer, except for a Metal Day Master with a Water Hurting Officer.
• The Hurting Officer generating Wealth, with Seven Killings revealed as well: Wealth turns to generating Seven Killings.
• The Hurting Officer paired with Resource while the Hurting Officer is light and the Day Master strong: Resource holds the Hurting Officer down, and its refinement cannot come through.
• Resource hurt by Wealth, when the structure is paired with Resource; Wealth bound by a combination, when the structure generates Wealth.

What restores it

• When the Hurting Officer generates Wealth and Seven Killings is revealed, an element combines Seven Killings away.
• For a Metal Day Master with a Water Hurting Officer and both the Officer and Seven Killings revealed, clear the mix on the stems: check or combine one away and keep the other.
• When the Hurting Officer meets the Officer, revealed Wealth in the right position can resolve it: the Hurting Officer generates Wealth, and Wealth generates the Officer.

Climate

The Hurting Officer structure calls especially for weighing the climate. For a Wood Day Master in summer, the Hurting Officer is Fire, and Water makes it most refined: Fire and Water temper each other. For a Metal Day Master in winter, the Hurting Officer is Water; the Metal is cold and the Water chilled, so Fire is welcome to warm them, and meeting the Officer becomes refinement instead. Decade phases

The True Interpretation of Ziping, on decade phases for the Hurting Officer, takes each pairing in turn. When the Hurting Officer generates Wealth: if Wealth is strong and the Day Master light, Resource and Peer decade phases suit; if the Day Master is strong and Wealth shallow, Wealth decade phases suit, and Hurting Officer ones are good too. 2. Check the Day Master’s strength: if it is strong, look for Wealth; if it is weak and the Hurting Officer strong, look for Resource.
3. Look for the Direct Officer and Seven Killings: with the Officer, see whether this is a Metal Day Master with a Water Hurting Officer, or whether Wealth resolves it; with Seven Killings, see whether Wealth feeds it.
4. If there is Resource, see whether Wealth hurts it; if there is Wealth, see whether it is bound by a combination.
5. Look at the season of birth: for a Wood Day Master in summer, look for Water; for a Metal Day Master in winter, look for Fire.
