The South Zone: Eight Family Placements
In feng shui, the South zone of a home holds the Fire (离) trigram, and what it brings depends on who sleeps there. The eight family members form eight placements in the South: Fellowship, Darkening of the Light, Abundance, After Completion, Grace, The Family, Fire and Revolution.

A son's or daughter's placement lasts only while they are unmarried and living at home; when one marries, the younger brothers or sisters move up a place. For how the zones are found and family members ranked, see How to Read Your Home Map.
Father: Fellowship (天火同人)
A married man who sleeps in the South forms Fellowship. It is an excellent placement for a home.
Career and money: In public office he wins people’s goodwill and has capable subordinates; his promotions and pay come from the top, and he rises swiftly to high rank. In business his income is plentiful, but only a partnership of two succeeds; as a sole owner he builds nothing large. In self-employment or service work he makes a name, his reputation spreads far and money flows freely.
Marriage: The wife who shares his room forms Darkening of the Light: she suffers hidden injuries, and she cannot escape bleeding. A couple in which the husband’s career is at its height while the wife meets one illness or mishap after another often lives in this placement. Because it harms the wife, it is less favorable than Heaven (乾为天) or Peace (地天泰).
Mother: Darkening of the Light (地火明夷)
A married woman who sleeps in the South forms Darkening of the Light. It is a dangerous placement: the mother suffers bleeding year after year, and it must be changed.
Character: She falls prey to petty people’s gossip and draws harm from others in secret.
Career and money: She loses money, and nothing goes smoothly.
Health: She has a hidden illness that is hard to speak of. Once bleeding occurs, it ends badly; only a person born in the Year of the Tiger comes through safely.
Eldest son: Abundance (雷火丰)
The Eldest son who sleeps in the South forms Abundance. The placement is common among sons.
Character: He is firm and unyielding, and quick to quarrel.
Career and money: In business he loses money; public office goes well for him.
Study and exams: He does well in exams.
Marriage: He is troubled in love. Unlike others born at the same time, his marriage first forms and then breaks.
Second son: After Completion (水火既济)
The Second son who sleeps in the South forms After Completion.
Character: He places little value on money.
Career and money: His prospects in public office are excellent, and business brings him money too: he has both wealth and office.
Study and exams: Academic honors are favored too, and he does well in exams.
Marriage: He marries eight years later than others born at the same time. He has a son before he marries, and often a partner outside marriage before a formal marriage.
Family: If his destiny includes a partner outside marriage, he has one son by his wife and one by a partner outside marriage.
Remedy: Once his career is settled, he moves to sleep in the East, where he forms Difficulty at the Beginning (水雷屯), and the Thunder (震) trigram of the East resolves his marriage problems.
Third son: Grace (山火贲)
The Third son who sleeps in the South forms Grace, the image of outward adornment. The placement forms only in a man.
Character: He presents some feminine inclinations and likes flamboyant, elaborately styled clothes. He is restless, fiery, strong-willed and quick to anger.
Career and money: Flight attendants and people in show business often live in this placement without knowing it.
Study and exams: The placement brings academic honors and a name, and favors exams. People born at the same time get different exam results, and some fail; the cause lies in the placement they live in.
Marriage: Marriage comes late. After thirty he wavers between going forward and pulling back.
Eldest daughter: The Family (风火家人)
The Eldest daughter who sleeps in the South forms The Family. The placement is common today.
Career and money: In public service she is not promoted.
Study and exams: She has no need to worry about academic honors.
Health: Gynecological illnesses are frequent.
Marriage: She marries five years later than others born at the same time.
Family: She gets on well with her family and is devoted to her home.
Second daughter: Fire (离为火)
The Second daughter who sleeps in the South forms Fire. The placement is common. The Fire trigram is hollow at the center, and the hollow is what makes it bright: only a mind kept empty sees clearly. A daughter at home who is capable, sensible, and knows when to step forward and when to step back is in this placement.
Character: She is clear-minded and fears nothing. She is set on moving away and does not want to stay where she is.
Career and money: She does not hold on to money and cares little for profit.
Study and exams: She scores high in exams and often wins a place at her first choice.
Marriage: She marries when her destiny says: if her destiny sets marriage at twenty-eight, she marries at twenty-eight in this placement too.
Third daughter: Revolution (泽火革)
The Third daughter who sleeps in the South forms Revolution.
Character: She is firm, brave and sensible.
Marriage: She has many troubles in love. She marries two years earlier than others born at the same time, and before her elder sister.
