The Southeast Zone: Eight Family Placements

In feng shui, the Southeast zone of a home holds the Wind (巽) trigram, and what it brings depends on who sleeps there. The eight family members form eight placements in the Southeast: Coming to Meet, Pushing Upward, Duration, The Well, Decay, Wind, The Cauldron and Great Exceeding.

A son's or daughter's placement lasts only while they are unmarried and living at home; when one marries, the younger brothers or sisters move up a place. For how the zones are found and family members ranked, see How to Read Your Home Map.

Father: Coming to Meet (天风姤)

A married man who sleeps in the Southeast forms Coming to Meet. The wife who shares his room forms Pushing Upward. When a husband philanders outside the home and has one romance after another, this placement is the cause.

Career and money: In business his income is plentiful, but it flourishes for only six years, and he must guard against the false appearances in it. In public office too, the first six years go well; from the seventh year on, it is sure to turn bad. He is drawn into lawsuits, while others born at the same time may come through untouched.

Marriage: He keeps a mistress outside the home and has several girlfriends besides. Husband and wife do not get along; if his destiny is to marry twice, the marriage is sure to break.

Mother: Pushing Upward (地风升)

A married woman who sleeps in the Southeast forms Pushing Upward. The placement is seen time and again.

Career and money: Public office greatly favors her, and she rises swiftly to high rank. Her career thrives, and her income is plentiful.

Marriage: Husband and wife compete with each other, and there are signs of discord. If the placement is not changed, misfortune is certain once the marriage enters its seventh year; this is not necessarily so for others born at the same time.

Family: She can inherit the family business and give it a new face.

Eldest son: Duration (雷风恒)

The Eldest son who sleeps in the Southeast forms Duration. This is one of the most common placements today. A man born in the Year of the Rat does well in it, and no plots arise.

Character: His intelligence is held down; he often cannot tell what to take and what to let go, and he loses his perseverance. He is easily drawn into religion, but what he follows is not the right path.

Career and money: His prospects in public office are poor, and business does not go smoothly; teaching posts and self-employment favor him.

Study and exams: He wins academic honors.

Marriage: He marries one year later than others born at the same time.

Remedy: He moves to sleep in the Southwest, where he forms Enthusiasm (雷地豫), which resolves this placement and is favorable.

Second son: The Well (水风井)

The Second son who sleeps in the Southeast forms The Well.

Character: His will is not firm; he gives in to temptation from outside and cannot pull himself free.

Career and money: Business goes well for him, and better still if he has a family business behind him. In public office he draws schemes against himself, disputes never end, and his promotions are blocked.

Marriage: He marries a woman who has been married before, and his wife is older than he is.

Third son: Decay (山风蛊)

The Third son who sleeps in the Southeast forms Decay, the image of three worms gathered in one dish, fighting one another for food. In a man it stays hidden in his heart and is hard to see from outside; in a home, the placement forms only in a man.

Character: His ambition for gain is enormous, and he often uses any means to reach his goals.

Study and exams: The placement brings academic honors; in study and exams his results are sure to stand a cut above others.

Marriage: There is the image of an early marriage: he marries four years earlier than others born at the same time, and he takes a wife while his two elder brothers are still unmarried.

Eldest daughter: Wind (巽为风)

The Eldest daughter who sleeps in the Southeast forms Wind. The placement greatly favors unmarried women and is sure to bring a happy marriage.

Character: She is steady and stays unafraid in times of trouble.

Study and exams: She wins academic honors and is sure to pass her exams.

Health: Her health is sound and she stays safe; whatever ill she meets turns to good, and no disaster arises.

Marriage: She is sure to marry a good husband, and she marries as soon as the Red Phoenix star stirs.

Second daughter: The Cauldron (火风鼎)

The Second daughter who sleeps in the Southeast forms The Cauldron. The placement favors unmarried women most of all; only for a woman born in the Year of the Rat is it bad and unfavorable.

Character: She is decisive and firm, and not easily led astray.

Career and money: Her path in public office runs smoothly, but money matters do not favor her.

Study and exams: Academic honors are favored, and her exams go smoothly.

Marriage: She is sure to marry a distinguished husband. She marries before her elder sister, and in winter.

Third daughter: Great Exceeding (泽风大过)

The Third daughter who sleeps in the Southeast forms Great Exceeding. In human affairs, Great Exceeding has two readings: one is a great fault committed, the other is merit far exceeding what ordinary people achieve. As a house placement it works more narrowly: the youngest daughter of a family who marries first and marries best is often in this placement.

Character: She is too hard by nature and does as she pleases, before marriage and after alike.

Marriage: She marries three years earlier than others born at the same time, and there is the image of a husband ten or more years older than she is. She marries into a wealthy, distinguished family and enjoys wealth and honor to the full. If her partner is close to her in age, it is sure to go badly, and the marriage breaks easily.
